Startail - The Giraffe who Sang Rainbows into Being
And now for something completely different. This is part of the Startail 'verse, a world where animals live in clouds, create their own magic, and can do everything from singing rainbows into being, to creating and carrying stars, and generally just being extraordinarily twee.
I don't get to work in this world very often which is a shame, as it's tremendous fun and so different from my spiritual art.
Paint ALL the colors! You also do a marvelous job with stylization here. I'm impressed that you can do different versions of that. This doesn't look the same as your totem work, but still looks terrific.
I think stylisation - for me at least - is in the line and shape of a thing. If you reduce something down to its basic shapes, then you can play with those shapes in a really fun way. So for the giraffe, I drew an almost squat vase shape, and then worked in the legs, the puffed out chest, etc. Stylising things is just fun. Although realism is great too.
Yes, that's the core of stylization. It reduces things to their most basic essence, and then does something interesting with that. It's a reason why I like quilt patterns, for instance.
