Pelican as Firebird by Ravenari Pelican as Firebird by Ravenari
Pelican as Firebird

Essentially a firebird (similar to the phoenix) interpreted through a pelican. What type of pelican? Well nothing in particular, a bit of a hybrid I guess. It's a fantasy pelican phoenix, it can look like whatever it wants to!

-

pastels, Mi Tientes paper (55 x 75cm), some coloured pencil on the feathers for detail.

When I watch pelicans on the docks, I've always thought of them as unreal and amazing. Now you've taken it even further. Absolutely, incredibly beautiful piece.

Wow, I wouldn't have guessed that was pastel looking at this. This is great! And unique--never seen a pelican phoenix before. Really love the style you used, the bold simple shapes of the pelican's body are accented nicely by the crisp detail in the wings. Instant :+fav:

Wow. I would never have thought of making a pelican (an animal that practically lives off the water) as a fire bird. Speaking of which my car is a 1997 Firebird XD. Anyway nice concept, I like it.

OMG - at the museum where I'm doing my thesis research, I just came across something about a pelican eating the sun in Egyptian mythology! Unfortunately I didn't pay too much attention because it's not directly relevant to my research (I'm writing about the narratives surrounding an ancient Egyptian musical instrument) ...but I think we're on to something if you wanted to construct an 'origin story' here (How The Pelican Gained Its Fire, anyone?). ;)

Aw thank you so much! I love pelicans. They have such strong meanings in many of the Indigenous communities and are often custodians of death and passing. In my own belief system / culture, they mean the same, so it's one of the synchronicities that I love about living here.

That's such a beautiful connection; I'm very glad you were able to express it so wonderfully in this piece. :) I find that pelicans are immensely regal birds, as if they were kings of the sea. :)
