Lyrebird as Firebird by Ravenari Lyrebird as Firebird by Ravenari
Lyrebird as Firebird

Based on the Australian lyrebird, this is yet another unusual interpretation of the firebird / phoenix along the same lines as my:

Raven as firebird - [link]
Black swan as firebird - [link]
Duck as firebird - [link]
Pelican as firebird - [link]

Yeah. I'm weird.

pastels, Mi Tientes paper, 21.5 x 29.5 in (55 x 75cm)

I think it's a great idea, and works really well. =) I love the bird's pose with the tail feathers hanging down in front like that. The layout of the background is really nicely done, too.

The fiery elements seem very natural to the lyre bird's shape and form. The warm colours are rich and subtle, like the warmth of glowing embers welcoming one...or serving as a warning of lurking danger!

Thank you! And yeah, I think of a bird that could start great bushfires. I've come up with a few stories for this one. I like the idea that its courtship ritual involves lighting the tips of its tails into flame, and it attracts a female, and then the two of them spontaneously combust together and start the South-Eastern bushfires in Australia...
