Huginn and Muninn by Ravenari Huginn and Muninn by Ravenari
Huginn and Muninn

A wonderful, exciting commission project, and - given how much I love ravens and mythology - a subject I've never tackled! The Yggdrasl in the background is a yew tree.

Crescent medium weight illustration board, with watercolour pencil, pencil, water-fast fineliner, and acrylic and iridescent paint. A3, or 11.7 x 16.5 inches, or 29.5 x 42 cm.

This is so awesome! I practice Asatru, so this illustration is near and dear to me.... and I've always felt that Yggdrasil was a yew tree more than I ever thought it was an ash tree. But, then again, I'm sure there were tribal variations :D

Thank you so very much. The yew tree was the client's request, but I have always loved the energy of the yew and to me it also makes sense as a world tree. :D

I really like how you executed this one. Norse mythology isn't my stronger point of knowledge, as I've read more in Greco-Roman origins. However, that being said, I am familiar with Odin's ravens, who embody thought and memory. Your design really captures the clever, slightly smug sense of two creatures who are far more than what they seem--as they are purportedly all knowing, and your rendition certainly gives the hint that they know something the viewer doesn't know! The Yggdrasil behind them and the golden tendrils hint at their connection to all aspects of life and the violet spheres possibly representing the realms of psyche/spirit--or the fruits of the Yggdrasil tree. This's an awesome piece!

Eeee, thank you so much. What a lovely comment. I definitely wanted to give them a sense of timelessness, with the golden tendrils and so on. I also have Muninn as the raven looking down towards the earth, into the primal soup of all memory, and Huginn looks up into the sky, into the realm of thought and intellect. :)

That definitely makes sense! Very subtle, too. I hadn't have guessed that much into it, but now that you point it out, it's an excellent interpretation of their natures.

This is gorgeous, it's great to see your interpretation of these birds. My mum did Old Norse at university, so Norse myths are pretty dear to my heart. I really like the way you've drawn them
